HydroNUTS: A standardized database of total nitrogen and phosphorus concentrations in global freshwater systems

HydroNUTS (Version 1.0) accompanies the manuscript “A standardized global database of total nitrogen and phosphorus concentrations in freshwater systems” and provides a harmonised compilation of freshwater nutrient measurements derived from multiple monitoring programs and open data repositories. The database contains over 2.7 million observations of total nitrogen (TN) and total phosphorus (TP) from more than 50,000 monitoring stations spanning 79 countries across six continents, representing one of the most comprehensive assembled resources for evaluating nutrient dynamics in freshwater ecosystems. Records were standardised to consistent units, georeferenced where possible, and subjected to structured quality-control procedures to identify implausible values and unresolved reporting issues. Original measurements, units, source metadata, and licensing information are preserved to maintain full data provenance and traceability. HydroNUTS was developed to enable large-scale analyses of nutrient loading, eutrophication risk, and freshwater ecological condition, and is suited to spatial, statistical, and process-based modelling applications.
