Wildfire in Evia Island, Central Greece, Greece (2024-07-31)

On the 31 July 2024 at 13:00, a wildfire is reported to have affected Evia Island, Central Greece, Greece. The wildfire started near the Pissonas village, 15 Km northeast from Chalkida. The fire expanded rapidly due to strong winds. Residents of Afrati, Kamari, Kalyvia, and Agios Gevrgios Armas had to be evacuated and a 112 cell-broadcasting message was sent for this purpose. Ground forces and aerial means were used for fire suppression. 60 vehicles with 122 firefighters, 72 ground forces, 10 helicopters and 15 airplanes were used for fire suppression, assisted by municipality vehicles/machinery and volunteer organizations. Copernicus EMS Rapid Mapping is requested to provide fire extent emergency mapping. The fire is ongoing and firefighters are still operating in the area.
