Dataset of publications reporting clinical applications and effects of external chest or abdominal compressions in acute respiratory failure caused by obstructive lung diseases

This dataset contains the results of an analysis of journal papers that reported prehospital or in-hospital application of external chest compressions or external abdominal compressions for managing spontaneously breathing or ventilated individuals with acute respiratory failure caused by bronchial asthma or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. The search for eligible papers was conducted in June 2026 using PubMed, Scopus, free web searching, and hand-searching of the bibliographies of eligible publications and relevant reviews. No limitations were imposed regarding publication year, language, or study design. The data charting form collected the following data: publication authors, year, country of origin, publication type, web link, study design, study subjects, number of observations, patient age, patient gender, patient clinical status, presence of signs of lung hyperinflation, patient's breathing during the compression manoeuvre, presence of an endotracheal tube (intubated or non-intubated), concomitant drug and gas therapy, type of compression manoeuvre, place of application of the compression manoeuvre (prehospital or in-hospital), technique of the compression manoeuvre, duration of the compression manoeuvre, potential benefits or disadvantages of the compression manoeuvre, observed positive or negative clinical effects of the compression manoeuvre, patient outcomes, and author conclusions. The dataset was used to perform the related scoping review.
