The fungal phytobiome of sorghum (Sorghum bicolor)

Targeted sequencing of the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) 2 region was used to characterize the diversity and composition of fungal communities of three sorghum cultivars commonly planted in South Africa, in different plant parts above and below soil level, rhizosphere soils and bulk soils. The results will be important in creating baseline frameworks for the monitoring of community shifts or changes that can be exploited to increase agricultural production of sorghum to benefit food security.
