V2N3 crystallizes in the trigonal P-3m1 space group. The structure is three-dimensional. V+4.50+ is bonded to six N3- atoms to form a mixture of distorted edge and corner-sharing VN6 pentagonal pyramids. There are three shorter (2.03 Å) and three longer (2.05 Å) V–N bond lengths. There are two inequivalent N3- sites. In the first N3- site, N3- is bonded to six equivalent V+4.50+ atoms to form edge-sharing NV6 octahedra. In the second N3- site, N3- is bonded in a rectangular see-saw-like geometry to three equivalent V+4.50+ and one N3- atom. The N–N bond length is 1.34 Å.
