VPRS 18019 Rave Magazines

This series consists of monthly 'Rave' magazines, produced from 1976 to 1992 by the trainees at Winlaton Youth Training Centre and Nunawading Youth Residential Centre (VA 5093), with the help of the teaching staff at the Education Centre.The project was funded by recurrent Children in Residential Care Grants from the Department of Education.To produce the magazines, trainees acted as editors, layout designers, artists, writers and printers.Drawings, poems, photographs, short stories and articles about such issues as tattoo removal and drug use are featured in the publications. The magazines present the thoughts and feelings of the trainees in a way that the other institutional records do not.Special editions were produced for annual Open Days, Christmas and the 50th edition of the magazine. These magazines were sold for a small fee to staff, ex-trainees and members of the Winlaton Community Support Group. They were also sent free to other institutions and gaols.This series does not represent a complete collection of the Rave magazines as some issues are missing.
