Growth of Bacteroides fragilis under nanaerobic conditions

Although underappreciated, many gut symbionts are able to respire using oxygen as the terminal electron acceptor. We show that Bacteroides species are metabolically robust and do not mount stress responses in the presence of 0.1 - 0.15% oxygen, defined as nanaerobic conditions similar to the concentration of oxygen at the epithelial layer of the colon.
