The overall objective of the InSPACE-4 investigation was to study the effects of particle shape and toggle duty cycle on the phase separation kinetics of particles in toggled fields. Three specific objectives include: (1) investigation of phase separation kinetics of anisotropic particles in toggled fields, (2) study the effect of toggle duty-cycle on the phase diagram, and (3) perform concurrent ground-based self-assembly experiments using the same magnetic colloids and extend the work to dielectric (insulating) particles driven by toggled alternating current (AC) electric fields.Concurrent ground-based experiments help translate International Space Station (ISS) discoveries to Earth-based manufacture by providing additional insights into the structure of equilibrated phases.
