Impact of coronavirus on monthly rail freight traffic in U.S. 2020-2021

In 2020, the monthly number of carloads transported by U.S. railroads declined due to the coronavirus outbreak. Rail freight traffic bounced back in September 2020 to over 1.1 million carloads but still a 9.7 percent contraction compared to the same month the year before. Freight rail traffic picked up in 2021 and 2022, reaching some 915,300 carloads in February of that year.
