We compiled a global dataset using 41 studies that simultaneously investigated priming effects in topsoils and subsoils at corresponding sites with addition of simple C (<i>e.g.</i> glucose) or complex C (<i>e.g.</i> plant litter). The difference in the priming effect caused by simple and complex C between subsoil and topsoil depended on ecosystem type.
