VPRS 13299 Register of Lessees and Licensees, Beechworth, Various Land Acts.

Under the sections of various Land Acts, licenses to occupy land were granted ( see for example Section 47 Land Act 1869) or leases were granted for specified periods of time ( see Sections 19 and 20 Land Act 1869). Rents were avble to be paid at local District Survey offices or to local Receivers of Revenue who recorded these payments prior to transmission of the details to the Deparetment of Crown lands and Survey in Melbourne.Records of rent payments were kept in Registers of Lessees and Licensees which gave the date of the license or lease, the name of the licensee or lessee, the location (parish, section and allotment) and the extent of the land. Financial details included the details of rent instalments paid. In the column for remarks are notations regarding such matters as forfeiture, revocation and transfers of licenses or leases and any relevant references to correspondence, later purchase of the land or entries in the Government Gazette regarding Ministerial approval of the license or lease and gazette notices for renewal. For Registers such as this maintained by local officers or Receivers of Revenue there may be a signature by the licensee for the receipt of a license.
