VPRS 9471 List of Classified Indexable Headings (Refer to Microfiche Copy, VPRS 14727)

This series comprises the List of Classified Indexable Headings which appears to have been compiled sometime between 1954 and early 1958 and consists of all classified headings in use at that time.The subject classification system was used to classify correspondence received by the State Rivers and Water Supply Commission between 1906 and 1958 contained in two series in PROV custody - VPRS 3844 and VPRS 6008. At that time, the Commission maintained a document level control of correspondence, registered according to an annual single number system (referred to as Variable or Varying Top Number System).The classification system was undergoing constant changes throughout its active life with a significant number of additional headings added to the original system over time. Early correspondence registered by the State Rivers and Water Supply Commission was classified under broader headings current at the time of the file/document registration. With the passing of time, the classification system needed to be expanded in order to reflect the changing responsibilities and cover all functions and activities of the Commission, so that when a particular transaction took place, the correspondence documenting the transaction could be placed on the relevant file.
