TEKBreizh-Soil Organic Carbon Planning layers MetadataObject: Creating an interacting dashboard for Soil Organic Carbon Land Planning for the Brittany RegionFunded by European Horizon 2020 program within Marie-Sklodowska Curie n 899546, the TEKBreiz project aimed at starting to map out the Traditional Ecological Knowledge of the Breton landscape to support climate-resilient food-system planning and decision-making.Final Data Dashboard built from this layer can be found on Tableau Public at: https://public.tableau.com/views/SOC-Breizh-Final/MainMap?:language=en-US&:sid=&:display_count=n&:origin=viz_share_linkSummary :The latest IPCC report presents the latest scientific conclusions on mitigating the acceleration of global warming. It underlines the importance of carbon sequestration to effectively mitigate disruption and keep it below +2 degrees Celsius. In alignment with 1) our multidimensional approach to address perennial agricultural land management within our TEK research, 2) our commitment to develop applied research tools to support the strategic goals of the Brittany Region, particularly strategic objectives S04, S07, we decided to produce a tool to assist Breton decision-making in regards to Carbon Sequestration planning based on land-use scenarios.Soils Revealed at https://soilsrevealed.org/ is a platform for visualizing how past and future management changes soil organic carbon stocks globally. It is based on the best, and sometimes only, available soil data, information about the environment and computer simulations over time. Projections for the coming decades are based on scenarios issued by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC).Sources :New Multi-territory Polygon Layer for the Brittany region: Open Galleryhttps://www.arcgis.com/home/gallery.html?sortField=relevance&sortOrder=descSatellite Database «Soils Revealed ». It is based on the best, and sometimes only, available soil data, information about the environment and computer simulations over time. Projections for the coming decades are based on scenarios issued by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC).It Provides global estimates at a spatial resolution of 250 m of how soil organic carbon might change under different land management and land cover scenarios between 2018 and 2038. These data are a spatial implementation of the IPCC (2019) Tier I bookkeeping approach to soil organic carbon stock change for a series of scenarios. For the purpose of our analysis, we picked three scenarios that seem to contrast largely in terms of land management practices:“Agriculture régénérative”: Cropland management: high organic inputs and minimum disturbanceRepresents the combined impact of a shift from current management to cover crop, green manures or other higher residue return practices and shifting to no-till on all cropland areas.
“Paturages Améliorés”: Grassland management: sustainable pastures and adaptive grazingOn managed pastures, this scenario represents a shift to sustainable management with light to moderate grazing together with at least one improvement to vegetative growth. On rangelands, this scenario represents a shift from current management defined by land degradation to high intensity grazing.
Dégradation et deforestation: Land degradation (including forest conversion to cropland)In addition to further degradation of grasslands and cropland, forests are converted to conventionally managed low residue input cropping systems. We added a fourth variable representing the initial carbon stocks provided by the Soils Revealed Analysis:“Stocks Initiaux”: Initial Soil Organic Carbon Stocks from 2018 that formed the basis for the Soils Revealed Analysis. We added that initial stock to the other variables to obtain end result estimates for 2038.Data Processing· Extraction of zonal statistics using QGIS at the town boundary level for all historical counties (departements) of the Brittany Region.· Cleaning boundary and statistical layers before import· Processing the four statistical layers for each variable into one condensed CSV file using Tableau prep software· Importing the New Multi-territorial Brittany Polygon Layer and the SOC final statistical file into Tableau Desktop for visualization· Testing visualizations: agreeing on one main interactive map and a comparison line graph· Adding filters for Years, Land scenarios, Towns, Traditional Bretons Territories (Bodlore Layer), Historical Breton Territories and Administrative Counties· Working through several versions towards final dashboard· Publishing the dashboard on Tableau Public
