NRS-18326 | Pathology Registers [Royal Newcastle Hospital]

This series is currently represented by three volumes, which together cover the period from 10th October, 1922 – 16th January, 1934. These volumes are quarter-leather-bound folio ledgers typical of their period. Each bears the words “Pathological Record” on its spine.Each volume contains the following information: entry no., date, name of patient, Medical Officer responsible for the case, type of specimen submitted, test required, and result. Entries are in strict chronological order. Entry numbers run continuously until the 3rd January, 1926, at which point a decision was evidently made to begin numbering anew. The new count commenced with the entries already made from the 1st January, and continued until the end of the year. Thereafter a new count was commenced each 1st January, except that the count for 1929 commenced on the 19th January, that coinciding with the commencement of a new volume. Numbering of entries was discontinued from the 30th August, 1930.The first entry in the earliest surviving volume is numbered 13120, indicating that at least one earlier volume once preceded it, and that the starting date for this series is unlikely to have been later than 1918. Entries in the latest surviving volume continue to its very last page, making it seem more likely than otherwise that the series continued past this point.
