The objective of this project is to understand phase selection in structural alloys and to investigate the effects of convection on time-dependent nucleation phenomena during rapid solidification from the melt. The ELFSTONE investigation involves a collaboration with the European Space Agency's (ESA) Thermolab Experiment which focuses on thermophysical properties data measurement of industrial alloys in the liquid phase as a function of temperature. The property values obtained are used to increase the accuracy of numerical modeling of casting and solidification processes of metal alloys.
