In recent years, researchers have begun to use the soil-dwelling nematode Caenorhabditis elegans as a potential animal model to study the pathogenesis of Shigella. The aim of this project is to use RNA-sequencing and other experimental techniques to further develop this model to understand the importance of DAF-16, antimicrobial peptides, and ROS in Shigella-exposed worms. We consider that this knowledge will be extremely useful to researchers dedicated to the development of this new in vivo model to study bacterial pathogenesis.
