AXOS-SHIME

The project aimed to investigate the effect of four different formulations containing arabinoxylan-oligosaccharides (AXOS) on the gut microbiota, and to compare the prebiotic properties of formulations. For this purpose, an in vitro simulation of gastrointestinal transit was carried out by using the Simulator of the Human Intestinal Microbial Ecosystem (SHIME) instead of an in vivo trial. Faecal samples were collected before, after treatment, and after the wash-out period from the bioreactors and the levels of SCFA as long as the bacterial and fungal microbiome were analysed.
