Sphingobium yanoikuyae strain XLDN2-5 was isolated by enrichment from petroleum-contaminated soil. This isolate could utilize carbazole as the sole source of carbon, nitrogen, and energy. This strain also has the ability to degrade dibenzofuran and dibenzothiophene when using carbazole as the growth substrate, suggesting that strain XLDN2-5 might be useful in the bioremediation of environments contaminated by these compounds.
