Abidjan has privately-run medical and dental facilities that are considered adequate but not up to U.S. standards. Pharmacies are well-stocked with medications from Europe but may not carry newer drugs. Medical care outside of Abidjan is limited. Doctors and hospitals expect cash payments at the time of service. Ivoirian footballer Didier Drogba announced this month that his foundation would construct five hospitals in Cote d’Ivoire’s major cities: Abidjan, San Pedro, Man, Yamoussoukro, and Korhogo. Likewise, LUKOIL Overseas will invest USD 400,000 for a mother-child hospital that will have 150 beds and be located near the botanic garden in Bingerville.
