This snack is traditionally cooked with butter or oil in a stove-top kettle or pot, however, a wide assortment of microwave popcorn or ready-to-eat popcorn is available in the market. In 2013, more than one billion pounds of unpopped popcorn was sold in the United States. During this period, this variety accounted roughly 90 percent of popcorn sales for at-home consumption.Microwave popcorn was introduced to the public in the early 1980s. Popcorn kernels are packed in a sealed microwave-safe paper bag along with cooking oil, seasonings, and natural or artificial flavorings. Diamond Foods Inc. was the second-leading single-serve microwave popcorn vendor in the United States in 2015. The company sold over 66 million units of popcorn that year, generating more than 236 million U.S. dollars in sales. Pop Secret, Orville Redenbacher’s Pop Up Bowl and Pop Weaver were the most popular single-serve microwave popcorn brands in the country in 2015. That year, U.S. consumers also demonstrated a preference for private label brands—approximately 53.28 million units of private label single-serve microwave popcorn were sold nationwide.Smartfood and Skinny Pop were the country’s top ready-to-eat popcorn brands in 2015, with combined sales of 253.5 million U.S. dollars.
