This unfinished marble portrait herm, with original genitals still intact, probably depicts a Kosmetes. In Athens, Kosmetes were officials responsible for the training of the ephebes after the reorganization of the ephebeia around 335-334 BC. The kosemetes was chosen by the people, presumably from those citizens over 40 years of age.
