This dataset was created by researchers from the University of Helsinki and the University of Turku in Finland. It records individual and household migration trends spanning the period from 1800 to 1920, based on an analysis of Finnish church migration records. The dataset comprises over six million records extracted from roughly 200,000 handwritten images of migration documents. The development of this dataset utilized deep learning technologies including layout analysis, table detection, cell classification, and handwritten text recognition. This dataset is applicable to studies on internal migration, urbanization, household migration, and disease transmission in pre-industrial Finland, as well as other relevant research topics.
