When Culture Meets AI: A Cross-Cultural Study of Generative AI Dependency Among U.S. and Indonesian Business Students

This dataset contains anonymized survey responses from a cross-cultural study examining how generative AI (GenAI) dependency relates to perceived critical thinking and task performance among undergraduate business students in the United States and Indonesia. A total of 239 students were surveyed (USA = 122, Indonesia = 117), of whom 227 active GenAI users (USA = 116, Indonesia = 111) form the analytic sample. The survey measured three dimensions of the Generative AI Dependency Scale (Cognitive Preoccupation, Negative Consequences, Withdrawal), the Critical Thinking Disposition Scale, and the Task Performance subscale of the Individual Work Performance Questionnaire, alongside demographic information. All directly and indirectly identifying fields (submission timestamps and institution names) have been removed; the workbook includes a Survey Data sheet with all item-level responses and a Codebook documenting variable coding.
