Nature-based solutions catalogue for river landscapes

Nature-based solutions (NBS) are recognized as promising actions to alleviate societal challenges and achieve the United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). However, still confusion exists on which actions can be considered as NBS and how to downscale global SDGs into local actions. The objective of this NBS catalogue is i) to put forward a common vocabulary towards more operational rigor of the NBS concept by making actions explicit that can be considered as NBS and ii) to demonstrate how to consider sub-national contexts in the achievement of the SDGs with NBS by showcasing NBS multifunctionality and potentials to address multiple development goals. The NBS catalogue was developed within the PlanSmart project to support a sustainable development of the Lahn river landscape with NBS. It contains 650 NBS grouped into 30 key type measures (EU KTM classification system). For 38 NBS their ecological impacts, associated changes in ecosystem services and links to policy goals were documented.
