The blacktail shiner (Cyprinella venusta) is a small freshwater fish in the family Cyprinidae native to the United States, found in the southern United States west of the Appalachian Mountains (from Wikipedia entry). This sample of a male adult individual found in Oklahoma, USA, was procured by Richard Broughton, Fernando Melendez, Melissa Rincon-Sandoval, Sarah Ward, Dahiana Arcila, and Ricardo Betancur to generate a high-quality reference genome for the Vertebrate Genomes Project (VGP). Sequencing and genome assembly were conducted at the Vertebrate Genome Lab (VGL) at the Rockefeller University, led by Erich D. Jarvis, Giulio Formenti, and Jennifer Balacco.
