The goal of the NEON soil microbial DNA sequencing project is to track changes in the diversity and composition of bacteria, archaea and fungi in soil ecosystems through space and time. NEON collects surface soil samples to 30 cm depth from numerous sites distributed across the United States. Total genomic DNA is extracted and the 16S rRNA gene of the microbial community is sequenced using high-throughput methods.
