The main objectives of this research will be to assess the variation in biodiversity of microbial communities in freshwater sediments at a spatially and taxonomically high resolution for an entire river catchment and to identify how metal distribution in sediments, besides other environmental and biotic context-dependent factors such as climate change, drives this variation in biodiversity.
