Colorimetry of historical pigments and the available colour gamut per year, 1300-2000
Colorimetric coordinates of 69 historical pigments computed from measured reflectance spectra, and an estimate of the volume of colour obtainable in each year between 1300 and 2000. Colours are computed with the CIE 1931 2-degree standard observer, integrated from 360 to 780 nm, under four illuminants: D65 daylight, D50, incandescent (illuminant A) and a 1850 K blackbody approximating candle flame. XYZ, CIELAB, sRGB and Display-P3 values are given for each pigment, together with gamut membership flags. The gamut per year is computed by taking the pigments in use in that year, generating all binary mixtures with Kubelka-Munk theory, and measuring the volume of the convex hull in CIELAB. The source spectra are the FORS database of the Pigments Checker, published freely by Cultural Heritage Science Open Source. This deposit contains the derived values and the code that produces them, not the raw spectra. The limitations of the source data are stated in the README: non-white support, uncontrolled film thickness, acrylic binder instead of oil or tempera, and six of the 69 measurements flagged as unreliable with the reason given row by row. Versione italiana qui sotto. Italian version below.
