The West African nation is home to a number of endemic diseases including malaria, cerebral malaria, hepatitis, yellow fever, and various intestinal disorders. Recently sizeable outbreaks of cholera, measles, and Ebola have been straining the country’s medical infrastructure. The cholera outbreak of 2012 was attributed to consumption of unsafe drinking water and general lack of sanitation including practices of basic hygiene. Patient Zero for the current Ebola epidemic ravaging West Africa is believed to be a two year old in a Guinean village.
