Worldwide, more than 700,000 suicides occur each year, among young people and on weekends, a pattern that may reflect the weekend effect (WE). To compare the frequency of suicides during weekends and weekdays, using Binomial and Poisson distributions to prove the WE in suicide occurrences in Colombia over a nine-year period, thereby supporting the reorganization of mental health services.
