Methane contamination of shallow groundwater from natural or anthropogenic sources is a growing concern, particulary due to the rise in unconventional natural gas extraction technologies. Through a controlled methane release experiment, this project aims to study how microbial communities respond trough space and time to the contaminant in shallow groundwater systems. The information generated could potentially be applied to harness microoganisms, particularly methane oxidizers, for remediating methane-contaminated groundwater.
