Paphiopedilum. spicerianum (P. spicerianum) is a rare orchid species with great ornamental value. Asymbiotic germination is the most efficient propagation method for conservation and commercial purposes. However, the low germination rate and high protocorm developmental arresting rate are two major obstacles for the seedling establishment. Therefore, the development of effective propagation methods requires our basic understanding of embryo and protocorm development mechanisms.
