Sample preparation Beech wood from German origin was stepwise pyrolyse up to increasing temperature levels (100 °C, 300 °C, 400 °C, and 500 °C). More information can be found in Dernbecher et al. X-ray micro-computed tomography (µ-CT) µ-CT device: Procon CT alpha from Procon X-ray GmbH (Germany) Acquisation parameters: Source voltage: 100 kV Current: 30 mA Exposure time: 2000 ms Number of projections per 360°: 1200 All µ-CT images have a voxel size of 5.9 µm in each dimension.
