Lab 2 - dataset 4

In this experiment, 10 randomly selected adult trees of the same species (yellow birch) were selected in the woodlot to gather data. The diameter at the breast height was measured in centimeters for both the adult trees and their respective nearest saplings through transect measuring tape. Moreover, the distance between the adult trees and their nearest sapling trees was also measured in centimeters through transect measuring tape. I hypothesize that the average distance between the adult tree and its sapling is lower as compared to the sapling of different specie because the seeds from the same specie fall and germinate in the close proximity of the adult tree. The canopy coverage of the adult trees was estimated by forming a quadrant through fingers and pointing it towards the branches or leaves to see how much sky can be seen. Based on the coverage, a percent value was recorded. This experiment was done in groups of 3-4. Our group members included Sana Jamal, Ferinaz, Afraa Tarafdar and Maham Anees (me). Furthermore I and Sana gathered the data in woodlot, whereas Farinaz and Afraa collected the data in grassland. The data was collected on Friday September 26, 2014 on Keele campus of York University between 2:30 pm to 5:00 pm. The temperature was about 20ᵒC and it was mainly sunny.
