Glassine paper is a kind of specialty paper formed from low consistency stock under high pressure pressing. It has high transparency, unique glossiness, and high density. The product is usually thinner and less permeable than typical grades of papers. We examined the effect of fiber morphological characteristics on the suitability of making such grade. Eucalyptus camaldulensis and Trema orientalis were used as raw materials. After kraft pulping and bleaching their suitability for making glassine paper was evaluated. With regard to pulp yields, E. camaldulensis gave yield of 38.4% while T. orientalis was a much higher 53.9%. As for the pulp kappa number, T. orientalis pulp was lower than E. camaldulensis pulp (22.3 vs. 26.9). Because this grade requires highly beaten pulp stock, fiber cell wall shall not be overly thick; the ratios of fiber lumen diameter to fiber diameter (L/D) for both species were greater than 70, similar to that of commercial product. Hence, both species are deemed adequate as raw materials for making glassine paper. The physical properties of papers formed from the 2 species all comply with the requirements of B glassine (40 gsm). Due to it much higher pulp yield, however, T. orientalis is more advantageous as a potential raw material source.
