果子狸是珍稀野生动物, 由于其较高的经济价值而遭到滥捕, 野生果子狸近乎绝种。该项目经5年时间的调研和人工驯养实践, 认为野生果子狸可驯化为人工养殖的经济动物, 为我国畜牧业增加一个优良新品种。通过研究需弄清果子狸的生态习性, 造就一个适合果子狸生长及繁育的人工环境, 掌握果子狸的生理结构, 生殖过程及体内代谢过程, 弄清易感疾病的病原体及防治方法。解决人工饲养条件下的饲料配方及仔狸人工哺乳问题。同时还研究商品化养殖的实施方法。 经多年选育, 已成功地将野生果子狸驯化为可供大量人工养殖的优良经济动物, 为我国畜牧业增添了新品种。现已建成拥有3000头种狸的原种场, 并着手建设年产2万只种狸的养殖场。通过技术幅射, 已在省内外形成规模。该项目的实施在保护生态平衡, 挽救濒危野生动物方面具有积极意义。

Masked palm civets (Paguma larvata) are rare wild animals. Due to their high economic value, they have been subjected to excessive poaching, leading to the near extinction of wild populations. This project, after 5 years of field investigations and artificial domestication practices, confirmed that wild masked palm civets can be domesticated into farmed economic animals, thereby adding an excellent new breed to China's animal husbandry industry. Through this research, the team clarified the ecological habits of masked palm civets, created an artificial environment suitable for their growth and reproduction, mastered their physiological structure, reproductive processes and in vivo metabolic processes, as well as identified the pathogens of their susceptible diseases and corresponding prevention and control measures. Additionally, the project solved the problems of feed formulas under artificial breeding conditions and artificial lactation for juvenile civets, and studied the implementation methods of commercialized breeding. After years of selective breeding, wild masked palm civets have been successfully domesticated into excellent economic animals suitable for large-scale artificial breeding, adding a new breed to China's animal husbandry industry. At present, a foundation breeding farm housing 3,000 breeding civets has been established, and construction of a breeding farm with an annual output of 20,000 breeding civets is underway. Through technology diffusion, the breeding scale has been formed both within and outside the province. The implementation of this project has positive significance for protecting ecological balance and saving endangered wild animals.
