WATiS was implemented to facilitate the information
exchange among various research groups and administrative agencies for the part of the Wadden Sea along the German coast in the North Sea area.
A central database WADABA keeps all data consistent. A user piloting system serves as data finder. Interfaces to other database systems and a geographic information system (GIS) are provided. Network connections are established. The data is transferred and further processed in locally distributed systems.
The data contained in the central database are structured by project. Thus the data and items are flexible and steadily growing. Up to now the WADABA contains data of 42 projects. They cover themes of sedimentology, biology, organic and inorganic pollutants, some meteorological and hydrological data, and as background information the topography. The region of the German Wadden Sea is covered from roughly the dike line to the 10 meter isobath below sea level.
