Understanding why many Nigeria women decline surgical treatments for cervical cancer

Cervical cancer continues to cause avoidable illness and death among women in Nigeria, despite the availability of effective treatment for early-stage disease. This community-based observational study explores social, cultural, economic, and informational factors influencing women’s refusal of surgical treatment. Drawing on informal hospital observations, community and home visits, educational tutoring interactions, and literature review, the study identifies fear of surgery, financial hardship, cultural and religious beliefs, family influence, and limited cancer awareness as key barriers. The findings highlight the need for culturally sensitive education, trust-building, and community engagement to improve acceptance of life-saving surgical care.
