Flood in Abruzzo, Molise and Basilicata regions, Italy (2026-03-31)

From the afternoon of March 31st, Italy was hit by severe weather, bringing snow and heavy rain, particularly over the Molise, Abruzzo, and Basilicata regions. The rainfall caused a rise in river water levels, with several rivers reaching the third alert threshold. The National Civil Protection issued a red alert for parts of the affected regions. The most critical situation concerned the Liscione Dam, in the Molise region, which reached its maximum capacity and discharged water downstream toward the industrial zone of the city of Termoli, which had already been evacuated. The activation was useful for monitoring the flooded areas downstream of the dam, especially the area near the industrial zone of Termoli. Copernicus EMS Rapid Mapping was requested to provide flood extent and damage assessment emergency mapping.
