The common banded mosquito Culex (Culex) annulirostris Skuse, 1889 is a cryptic species complex that vectors numerous arbovirus diseases in Australasia. This study combines nuclear and mitochondrial genome sequencing with morphological analysis of voucher specimens to determine key diagnostic characters that will enable each cryptic species to be identified. This information can then be used to relate the genetic diversity and distribution of different species and populations to biogeographical differences observed in arbovirus vector competence and disease risks posed to humans and wildlife.
