Excavation project 888M is located east of the Pecos River in southeastern New Mexico in
the Mescalero Sands. The site is located within the parabolic dune setting of the sand sheet. Two
thermal features, with no associated artifacts, were discovered during ground clearing activities for
the preparation of a well pad. Feature 1 dated to 1400 ± 60 radiocarbon years BP, and Feature 2
dated to 1280 ± 60 RCYBP. Two macrofloral and one pollen sample from Feature 1 and two
macrofloral and two pollen samples from Feature 2 were analyzed to determine possible plants
used and local vegetation at the site. One modern pollen sample recovered from the site was
analyzed as a control.
