The data was collected at York university keele campus wood lands. We moved from edge of the woodlands and walked toward the centre until an adult tree (a tree that was more than twice as tall as measurers) was found. Then the diameter of that tree was measured at the breast height of the measurer, using a measuring tape. Then the closest adult tree from the measured tree was found and it’s diameter at breast height was measured and the distance between these two trees was measured. This was repeated until data for 10 pairs of trees were record. Trees were also judged to be in one of 3 conditions, old if the tree was rotting or breaking, huge if it had extensive canopy coverage, or living if it couldn’t be classified as old or huge.
