Distance Based Dataset- Bird Sightings

The experiment was conducted on Tuesday September 28th 2015 from approximately 4:00-4:30 PM at the Stong Pond area at York University. The temperature of the area was around 14°C with pouring rain. The experiment happened in the mowed grass located around the Stong Pond area. We laid down a transect and walked along observing if there were any bird species after every 30 metres. We waited around 1 minute at each stop on the transect tape. At each stop we observed the wind speed using the Beaufort scale. For every bird observed at a stop we recorded its species and the frequency of the bird species. We tried to only observe each bird once in the experiment. We also recorded the approximate distance of the bird from the stop in metres. We did a total of 5 stops along the transect tape. In this experiment it allows the students to learn how to make large scale observations using a belt transect and how to use the Beaufort scale to calculate wind speed.
