VPRS 16629 Calendar of Prisoners Appearing Before Criminal Sessions

This series was used to record details of prisoners in Melbourne Goal, including prisoners bailed after committal, who appeared in the Criminal Sessions of the Colony.Information was maintained in columns which recorded the:- name of the prisoner- the ship on which they arrived, but not the date of arrival- their condition on both arrival and on entering the Gaol (entries usually being either "Free [Settler]", "bond" or "Exile")- committal details, being the name of the Justice, date and location- date the prisoner was received in the Gaol- charges faced- verdict (usually a date)- sentence details, and- a remarks column. This column would indicate if a prisoner was remanded or if the charge was dismissed.As prisoners were frequently remanded to later sessions, there may be multiple entries for a particular prisoner's case.It is unclear whether any other volumes were created in this series. The volume in the P1 consignment was transferred to PROV during 2010 after it had remained in private hands for a period of at least 35 years.
