Fluconazole-resistant Candida species are recognized by the CDC as a serious threat to human health. The goal of this project was to determine how different genetic backgrounds (different clinical isolates) adapt to fluconaozle treatment at the genomic level. Replicate lines were initiated from each "parental" clinical isolate and grown in the presence of fluconazole for ~100 generations. Whole genome sequencing was performed before and after fluconazole treatment and comparative genomics were used to identify SNPs, insertions and deletions (INDELS), loss of heterozygosity, and chromosome aneuploidy.
