Drosophila midgut microbial diversity in Smvt(i) and Npc2c(i)

In this study, we have assessed microbial diversity of wild-type adult Drosophila melanogaster midguts, as well as midguts RNAi-silenced for the biotin transporter Smvt and the sterol transporter Npc2c specifically in intestinal stem cells and progenitors (ISCs/EBs). Both Smvt and Npc2c were found to be necessary for intestinal homeostasis, regeneration upon infection and tumorigenesis. Thus, the dataset is relevant to model organism (Drosophila melanogaster) homeostasis and might provide insights for human disease.
