Hokkaido University's Tomakomai Experiment Forestis located on 2,715 ha of flat land in the cool temperate climate of northern Japan. The snow-free period is usually from mid-April to December, and the snow depth during the rest of year averages 0.7 m. The study site is a deciduous broadleaf forest dominated by more than 300-year-old Quercus crispula Blume with a canopy height of 18-20 m. Co-dominant tree species are Ostrya japonica Blume, Acer mono Maxim., Cercidiphyllum japonicum Sieb. et Zucc., and Tilia japonica Simonkai. The forest floor is covered with a perennial evergreen dwarf bamboo (Sasamorpha borealis). The soil type is a Volcanogenous Regosol with a depth of 0.5m. The turbulent fluxes of sensible heat, latent heat, CO2 were measured using the eddy covariance system.
