Anaerobic co-digestion of coffee wastes to promoting sustainability and circular bioeconomy in rural farms

this study investigated the feasibility of utilizing a synergistic mixture of coffee pulp and mucilage in a low-tech anaerobic digester implemented on a small-scale coffee farm in rural Andean Colombia. The coffee wastes were implemented gradually into the diet, and a constant monitoring of process stability and biogas production was carried out. During coffee wastes implementation in the diet, the effects of the new substrates on the microbial community composition was also evaluated through molecular biology tools. Finally, an economic and energetic assessment of implementing the new wastes in the low-tech digester was carried out.
