Our objective was to develop a fast and nondestructive method to estimate aboveground net primary production and biomass measuring vegetation cover. We double sampled vegetation cover and biomass in 150 and 50 plots for shrubs and grasses in the patagonian steppe. We performed simple linear regressions between vegetation cover and biomass for dominant species (shrubs: Mullinum spinosum, Senecio filagenoides, and Adesmia campestris; grasses: Poa ligularis, Stipa spinosa, and Stipa humilis), and life forms per green and total biomass. The information was collected in December 2003 during a field expedition to Rio Mayo, Chubut Province, Argentina. These data were obtained for project CRN12, wich has Dr. Osvaldo E. Sala as PI.
