In Italy, the distribution of supermarkets can be related to the distribution of its inhabitants. Being the region with the highest population, Lombardy counted the largest number of supermarkets with 981 stores as of 2021. Lazio followed with 861 supermarkets, while Campania ranked third with 813 supermarkets.
